My country - Día de la Constitución

Día de la Constitución / Constitution Day

When is Constitution Day in Spain?

El Día de la Constitution or Constitution Day is celebrated on December 6th every year.

Why is Constitution Day celebrated on December 6th?

Constitution Day is celebrated on December 6th to remember the day that the Spanish constitution was approved by the Spanish people in 1978. It is 46 years old this year (2024).

What is the constitution?

A constitution is a set of rules that guides how a country, state or other political organization works.

The constitution meant that Spain became a democracy. This means that the Spanish people could vote for their leaders. Before 1978, the Spanish people could not vote as the dictator Francisco Franco was in power.

  • The Spanish Constitution contains 169 articles, 4 additional provisions, 9 transitional provisions, one repealing clause, and one final clause, making it one of the longest texts in Europe.
  • The Constitution required additional laws to regulate its various aspects. In the first year after its approval, 45 laws were passed by the parliament.
  • Despite being over 40 years old, it has been reformed only twice: once to regulate foreign voting rights and another for budgetary stability.

Spanish people are proud to celebrate this day when their country became a democracy.
